September Film Series: The Magical Realism of Studio Ghibli

Renowned across the globe for their incredible stories, fantastical worlds, and groundbreaking animation, filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and the rest of the Studio Ghibli team have transformed the world of animation time and time again. Since the mid-1980s, Ghibli’s fantasies and fables have entranced audiences the world over, weaving together tales about humanity, nature, family, and how they intertwine.

Through this retrospective, we will be looking back on 40 years of Studio Ghibli with weekly film pairings: the juggernauts PRINCESS MONONOKE and SPIRITED AWAY that made Ghibli a household name in the west; the lighthearted fantasies of KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE and PORCO ROSSO; Miyazaki’s twin adventure films NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND and THE CASTLE IN THE SKY; And finally, the eco-fables MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO and THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA.

Week 2 | 9/13-9/19 — PORCO ROSSO + KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICES
Week 3 | 9/20-9/26 — CASTLE IN THE SKY + NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND
Week 4 | 9/27-10/3 — MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO + THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA
